At the Märkter Staurhein, the Rhine divides into the Grand Canal d'Alsace and the Altrhein. The Märkt weir was built between 1928 and 1932 and is part of the Kembs hydroelectric power station. The Grand Canal d'Alsace, which runs parallel to the Altrhein between Märkt and Breisach, was also constructed in this context. The weir at Märkt regulates the water inflow into the Altrhein, which was corrected in the 19th century. The Rhine is dammed by the two weirs and flows only sluggishly in a northerly direction. The weir then leads to the Rhine island between the Grand Canal d'Alsace and the Altrhein, where there is a path to the Kembs power station.
In winter and during migration periods, the reservoir is populated by many waterfowl, which can be quietly observed with the help of binoculars. On the right side of the Altrhein, a bicycle and walking path leads along the shore. The path is wheelchair and pram accessible. A fish ladder directly below the Märkt weir will one day enable salmon to migrate into the Rhine.
Refreshments
On the banks of the dammed Rhine there are tables, benches and barbecue areas for a cosy picnic. A good restaurant with fish specialities and a lovely summer garden is the Krone Märkt inn.

It is easy to get to Weil am Rhein by public transport. However, the bus service to Märkt is very limited, and it is worth walking or cycling here. Those arriving by car can park their vehicles at the car park at the weir.
