The Quäggirhy or Quackery pond is an old section of the Rhine near the French community of Village Neuf, or Neudorf. With the construction of the Kembs canal, it was cut off from the water flow and converted into a fish pond. Today, you can rest here and it is a good place for amateur fishers (only with a licence). Immediately adjacent is the Neudörfer Heide, a former gravel island of the Rhine. Together, these two habitats support a diverse flora and fauna so that water birds, such as swans and ducks, amphibians, such as the water frog, insects, such as dragonflies, as well as dry grasslands with demanding plant species can be found.
It is not possible to walk around the Quäggirhy, as parts of the area are used by commercial or residential areas. Access from the south along a small path is possible but relatively uninteresting. We recommend access from the north, as there are various reed beds as well as small pools with interesting flora and fauna.
The trail is not suitable for wheelchair users as parts lead onto unpaved paths.
Refreshments
There are no picnic or barbecue areas around Quäggirhy. If you still want to enjoy a snack at the pond, you should bring a picnic blanket and food from your rucksack. However, Village-Neuf offers various restaurants and shopping facilities.
