The Hüningen Canal is a historical connection canal for shipping between Mulhouse and Huningue, which was built between 1824 and 1834. Today it is primarily a local recreation area with water sports but also climbing opportunities in the agglomeration area. The Treidel path, originally built for towing ships with horses, now serves as a convenient foot and bicycle path.
The Hüningen Canal is also a valuable water biotope with rare bird species. It runs through the alluvial landscape of the old Rhine, where the Petite Camargue Alsacienne nature reserve was established in 1982. For this reason, the site is suitable for nature lovers, but also for sportsmen and women, or simply for a relaxing family outing.
The terrain is flat for wheelchair users, but bumpy on the shore sections.
Refreshments
There are several picnic areas along the canal. In addition, there are further picnic and barbecue areas at the locks in the Petite Camargue area. Some restaurants in Huningue offer simple meals. The restaurant La nouvelle Brasserie Runser northwest of the canal bridge in Village-Neuf is particularly recommended.
Tour
A possible tour starts in Huningue, where the old canal has been transformed into the Parc des Eaux Vives. From there, after about 2 km to the north-west, you reach Village-Neuf, where a bridge crosses the canal, offering an interesting view. Another 3 km to the northwest is the old locks in the Petite Camargue area. Here you will find picnic and barbecue areas as well as a fishing pond (fishing is only possible with a valid state waters card). From here, you can also go for long walks and/or hikes through the nature reserve.
