The popular recreational destination Kadermündung near Märkt (Weil am Rhein) is a renaturalised estuary of the Rhine tributary of the Kander. From the Märkt weir in a northerly direction, it can be reached via a footpath and cycle path along the banks of the Rhine. In summer, this is a popular barbecue, play and meeting place, as the estuary also offers exciting habitats with its interesting riparian woodland and accessible riverbank. The old Kander estuary before the implementation of the "Integrated Rhine Programme" was a real obstacle, especially for migrating fish. Today, beautifully designed and informative boards of the Weil am Rhein angling club on the fishing and nature trail provide information about the climatically special conditions and the diverse and partly rare vegetation.
But be careful in the immediate estuary area: swimming through fast currents, slippery rocks and shallows can be life-threatening.

From the barbecue site, a small path leads upstream from the Kander to the weir. There you will find a renaturalised section of stream with deadwood areas, baffle slopes and gliding slopes, as well as an interesting wooded strip with a large nightingale population. Cross the bridge to return to the mouth along the right bank of the stream. Caution is advised when crossing the bridge due to fast-moving cars.
Refreshments
At the mouth of the Kander there is a barbecue area with picnic benches and tables. For special occasions, there is also the Gasthaus Krone in Märkt.

We recommend arriving by bike along the banks of the Rhine to the mouth of the Kander. Cars can be parked directly at the Kander (car park) from Märkt in the direction of Efringen Kirchen. Travelling by public transport is not recommended due to a lack of connections and distant bus stops (to the mouth of the Kander).
