The Rothleible, or also known as "Bois de Rothleible", is a mixed deciduous forest on extremely dry soil with many rare, heat-loving plants and animals on the territory of the French municipality of Hirtzfelden. The low-growing forest is repeatedly interspersed with clearings. Downy oaks dominate here and Scots pines can be found in the driest places. The flora is particularly rich with striking species such as diptam, grass lilies, broom, bellflowers, blood-red cranesbill, purple clover and many more. In addition, plants from the interior of the European continent as well as from the edge of the Mediterranean region gather at this special site. The insect fauna is remarkably rich and is home to, for example, the common bee beetle, barred shrike or the small kingfisher. Remarkable bird species are nightingales, turtle doves and white-tailed grosbeaks. Also noteworthy are the occasional waterholes in the forest, which are used as wild boar roosts.
Tour
The forest near Hirtzfelden is criss-crossed by a dense network of paths running north-south and east-west. In the following we suggest a short walk in the centre of the forest area.
From the starting point at the crossroads in the direction of Meyenheim, or Reguisheim, cross the timber yard in a southerly direction and follow the path along the municipal boundary through the forest to tree marker no. 7. From here, a cross path turns off to the left. Follow this path until you reach a wide road that runs in a north-south direction. Here you branch off to the left in a northerly direction. There are several beautiful clearings in this area. Continue north along the road until you reach junction no. 35, where you turn left and return to the path along the municipal boundary to the starting point of the hike. At boundary stone II, turn right and return to the wood storage area.
Refreshments
There are no picnic or fire sites in the forest or on the proposed tour. Similarly, there are few restaurants and shopping facilities in the surrounding communes of Hirtzfelden, Réguisheim and Meyenheim, so we recommend taking some food from your rucksack.
