Between Suarces and Favrois, the D26 runs through the middle of a unique Sundgau pond landscape. The Sundgau hills are part of the Upper Rhine lowlands. It is demarcated in the east by the steep slope to the Low Terrace of the Hardt, in the south by the Pfirter (Falten) Jura, in the west by the Rhine-Rhone watershed and in the north by the Vosges Mountains roughly between Doller and Thur. The European Continental Divide runs through this region and the vast areas are covered by fertile loess soils.
Near the "Ferme Debray" there is a car park at the edge of the pond. From here, you can visit various ponds in the immediate vicinity on foot. The ponds are used for fish farming and probably date back to prehistoric times. A characteristic feature is the regular drying out of the ponds, which also leads to very special vegetation on the dry pond bottoms. Lake and pond lilies, pondweed and water hose adorn the water surface in wet seasons. The resident birdlife includes grey herons, coots, little grebes and, in migration season, ducks and limousines can be observed. The adjacent woodland areas are also of great interest to nature lovers with their birdlife and vegetation.
The paths along the ponds are often muddy and slippery and therefore not suitable for children and wheelchair users.
Refreshments
Drinks can be bought at the fishing club. Otherwise, however, there are no picnic or barbecue areas available. There are a few restaurants and shopping facilities in Suarce, Vellescot and Joncherey.
