The Lac de Lucelle is a small lake in a nature reserve in the rear of the Lützel valley near Lucelle in France. At the small village, France and Switzerland meet with the cantons of Basel-Landschaft, Jura and Solothurn. Below the dam, the Lützel flows through a mossy rock barrier. The pond has an extensive reed bed and a siltation zone in the rear part. The dense, dynamic reed growth on the west bank is characteristic of the lake. This reed stand is rich in species and is bordered by a sedge field. Ash trees, maples, alders and willows grow along the shore. A wonderful beech forest encloses the valley of the Lützel. Small watercourses from the forest nourish moist meadows with red night-flower, forget-me-not and chervil, among others. Other striking plants are the monkshood buttercup and the brook carnation. Various water birds can be observed at Lac de Lucelle, such as heron and mallard ducks, coots, mute swans, grey herons and kingfishers. Wagtails and dippers can also be found along the course of the stream. Among the mammals, marten species are best represented.

At the dam and around the lake, there are educational panels showing the flora and fauna of Lac de Lucelles.

Tour

The walk starts at the car park of the European Meeting Centre of Lucelle. Pass the monastery buildings to reach the dam of the pond. Cross the dam over the wooden footbridge through the reeds and walk around the pond. The crossing makes it possible to visit the nature reserve without harming animals and plants. In addition, thanks to the installation of a didactic nature trail on paved, wheelchair-accessible paths, people with walking difficulties can also discover the nature reserve.

Refreshments

There are only a few places to sit and picnic around Lac de Lucelle. However, the "Noirval" motel with a restaurant serving Jurassic specialities is located in the immediate vicinity. Downstream towards Kleinlützel, on the border between the cantons of Basel-Landschaft and Jura , there is also the hotel-restaurant "Neumühle" offering cuisine based on fresh and organic produce.
