The Landskron ruins are located on the Landskronberg in the French municipality of Leymen, directly on the Swiss border. It was first mentioned in 1297 and in 1814 it was conquered and destroyed by Bavarian and Austrian troops during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1984 the castle was acquired by an association, which has since been working on its preservation and partial reconstruction. Various restored parts of the castle can be visited. For example, the well-preserved main tower can be climbed. A visit to the Landskron ruins offers a short journey into the past and reveals impressive remains from medieval times. Its elevated position opens up an impressive panorama, for example from the tower, and you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Alsace, the Vosges, the Schwarzwald and the Rhine plain.
Landskron Castle lies on the edge of extensive forests in the transition area to meadow orchards and settlement areas in the valley. While numerous rare plants such as sainfoin, meadow sage and the widow's-eye flower with its pale violet inflorescences bloom on the rough grassland in May, migrating birds can be observed in September and October. Black storks have also been sighted.
Orientation boards make it easy to determine one's location and can be used as a starting point for many walks with the possibility of accessing the French long-distance hiking network.
Visiting the castle is dangerous during rain or thunderstorms. It is also unsuitable for young children due to many steep drops, unsecured window holes and embrasures.
Refreshments
There are several barbecue and picnic areas around the castle grounds. In addition, Leymen offers shopping and refreshment facilities. Near the car park, the "Chasseur" restaurant invites you to dine on regional specialities.
