The Hardtwald is an extensive, contiguous forest area in south-eastern Alsace between Mulhouse and Bartenheim. It was originally a hunting ground for the upper classes and is still a state domain today. Long, dead-straight paths and roads cross the forest mostly at right angles and many shelters and hunting lodges provide shelter in bad weather. In the southern part, an autochthonous oak-hornbeam forest has been preserved.
In 2005, the Hardtwald, also known as "Forêt de la Harth" or "Forêt de la Hardt", was declared a "Zone de Protection speciale" (special protection area) within the EU Natura 2000 project. This is because vegetation specialised in nutrient-poor soils had developed on the subsoil with coarse gravel and no loess overlay.
Tour
Between Bartenheim-la Chaussée and Bartenheim there is a car park for hikers, which is a good starting point into the Hardtwald. From here you can reach the north-eastern part of the Kembs Hardtwald on various paths, or the north-western part of the Kembs Hardtwald via two motorway bridges. Numerous paths allow smaller and larger rounds back to the starting point. The area is wheelchair and pushchair accessible.
Refreshments
There are various restaurants and shops in Bartenheim and Bartenheim-la-Chaussée. However, there are hardly any picnic, barbecue or barbecue sites at the excursion destination.
