The Totengrien in Istein has been a nature reserve since 1973. It is situated near Efringen-Kirchen, south of the district of Istein. The area covers 2.8 hectares and is a semi-arid grassland with a large population of various orchid species. The nature reserve is located in the area of the unregulated Rhine. Due to the former flooding dynamics of the Rhine, mainly coarse gravels have been deposited in this area. The very shallow fine soil layer does not allow water storage, which is why only very drought-resistant plants could settle here. For example, steppe spurge, carthorse, asparagus pea, woundwort, viper's bugloss, sunflower or common bedstraw can be found here. Native orchid species such as burnet orchid, pyramidal dogwort, bumblebee ragwort and mosquito hellebore also find ideal conditions here.
Tour
The entrance to the nature reserve is somewhat hidden in the south of the Isteiner Klotz at the edge of the country road in the direction of the A7 motorway. Various paths cross the area, making it easy to explore the flora without having to leave the paths. This is also to be refrained from according to the protected area ordinance in order not to endanger the unique vegetation. Adjacent to the Totengrien are various other areas of rough grassland, but also former alluvial forests and gravel extraction areas. These near-natural patches are repeatedly interrupted by areas of intensive agriculture.
The tour is not suitable for groups because of the narrow paths. The area is also not suitable for wheelchairs or prams.
Refreshments
There are no picnic or barbecue areas in the nature reserve. However, Efringen-Kirchen offers several shopping facilities and restaurants, such as the "Sternen" restaurant or the "Anker" inn.
