The Schauenburgfluh is located in the municipality of Frenkendorf on the eastern edge of the Gempen plateau, which belongs to the Tafeljura. The steep rock face faces south-east and from here you can enjoy a magnificent view. Sportsmen and women, especially climbers, like to use the rock face for climbing excursions. The Schauenburgfluh has been one of the classic and most important climbing areas in the Basel Jura for over half a century.

Nearby are the ruins of Neu-Schauenburg, dating from the 13th century, and the Bad Schauenburg hotel, which used to be frequented mainly for spa stays. The remains of a Gallo-Roman circumplex from the first century were discovered in the easternmost area of the rocky top. Today, its foundation measures only about five by five metres.

The Schauenburgfluh is located in the middle of the extensive forest areas of the Gempen plateau. The forest has a lot of boxwood in the undergrowth, which reaches up to the rock face and is then dominated by Scots pines and downy oaks. With a bit of luck, wall lizards can be observed sunning themselves on the warm walls of the temple foundation. The slightly lower lying and only slightly sloping terrain is partly used as farmland or as meadowland.

Tour

A short circular walk begins at the car park in the Rütenen/Berg area, west of Frenkendorf. Following the road, the forest is crossed in a westerly direction. Where the road leaves the forest, the Neu-Schauenburg ruins appear on the hillside. At the foot of the Fluh is a small picnic area with a fireplace. From here, the path leads northwards, where the forest path to Schauenburgfluh branches off shortly before the crest. To the far east are the foundations of the Gallo-Roman temple. The way back leads either along the same path back to the car park or via the Neu-Schauenburg farm through the Aspenrain back to the starting point.

The walk is not suitable for small children or wheelchair users.

Refreshments

There are only a few fireplaces in the area of the Fluh itself and setting up new ones is strictly forbidden. A few tree trunks serve as seats. However, there are several shops and restaurants in Pratteln. For special occasions we recommend the restaurant "Bad Schauenburg" (classic French menu in premium quality) or right next door the restaurant "Zum Schauenegg".
