In the small French municipality of Steinbrunn-le-Haut there is an artificially created pond surrounded by wet forest areas. It is the headwaters of the Muehlbach stream. A beautiful reed stand in the centre of the pond provides a habitat for various insect species. On the eastern edge there are also other small, natural ponds that serve as amphibian spawning areas. Southwest of the pond and beyond the Muehlbach stream, a beautiful reed meadow extends in a large spring horizon. In the centre is a prominent, large black poplar and there are autumn crocus, marsh marigold, spirea perennial and a second, larger stand of reeds. Nature enthusiasts can observe grey herons, mallards, yellowhammers and warblers here, among others. The damp forest is home to arum and serviceberry. The area is protected by the association "Le Conservatoire des Sites Alsaciens C.S.A.".
Tour
Between Steinbrunn-le-Haut and Obermorschwiller, a field path branches off to the south on the D6 until after a prominent S bend. This is the starting point for the walk. After a 10-minute walk, you reach the pond, which is fenced off from the road by a hedge. To visit the reed meadow, go back to the entrance area of the pond and follow the path further south to the stream. The reed meadow extends over a large area from here and the area can be surrounded on foot.
Due to the poor field paths in the wetland, the excursion is not suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
