The nature and pond reserve Autal is located east of the settlement core of Riehen. Extensive and small-scale farming has been preserved until today and the area is characterized by allotments and orchards. In the middle flows the Aubach, whose sources are located in the neighboring village of Inzlingen (D). At the bottom of the valley there are other springs, which supply water to the public fountains in the historic center of the rural community. The nature and pond reserve Autal belongs to the amphibian spawning areas of national importance. Various species of water frogs and dragonflies can be found here, as well as mallards, gray herons and grass snakes. Strikingly beautiful flowers such as swan flowers, yellow irises, water lilies and yellow pond lilies can also be spotted. Riparian trails and a boardwalk provide glimpses of various areas of endangered habitats.
