In the 13th century, a magnificent moated castle was built in the Rhine bend near Beuggen, about 20 kilometres east of Basel on the Baden-Württemberg bank of the Rhine on the territory of the town of Rheinfelden. At first it served as the seat of the Landkomtur, the head of the Teutonic Knights. Later it was a military hospital and a children's home for the poor. From 1820 to 1980 it served as a children's home. Since 1983 it has belonged to the Protestant Regional Church of Baden and is used as a conference and educational centre.
The garden is freely accessible. The interior of the castle, however, can only be visited by appointment. Various public events are regularly held in the castle. The large castle garden with benches directly facing the Rhine invites you to take a relaxing walk, to linger or to enjoy. The huge, old ginkgo tree, which belongs to the gymnosperms, is also impressive. The castle church is open to the public, and twice a day there is a prayer service led by the Beuggen community. Beuggen Castle also offers hotel rooms, catering and castle tours.
Tour
Schloss Beugen is a railway station to the north of the Rheinfelden (Baden) station on the railway line to Waldshut. It lies on the Rhine embankment path between Rheinfelden and Schwörstadt. If you leave the castle courtyard upstream via the gate, you will come to the Bible garden via a flower-lined path. From here you can walk down to the right to the Rhine, where you can sit on the gravel beach, have a picnic and bathe your feet. Following the banks of the Rhine in the direction of flow, you will eventually either reach Rheinfelden railway station or can continue the walk on the Swiss side via the Rhine bridge.
The route is accessible for wheelchairs and prams.
Refreshments
There are plenty of picnic and barbecue areas along the banks of the Rhine. Furthermore, in both Swiss and German Rheinfelden, delicious restaurants and shops offer various options for refreshments. The "Pastakönig" restaurant is highly recommended. For special occasions, visitors can reserve a table at the restaurant "Beuggen 1" directly at the castle itself.
